MySixWriMo Day 29

*****

Hump day. I don’t know about you, but I’m having a hard time getting over the hump today. To make things slide a little easier, I’m going to offer two prompts again today.

Here’s our offering from Robert Lee Brewer at Poetic Asides:

For today's prompt, I want you to title your poems (sixes) "Never (blank)" with you filling in the blank with a word or phrase. Then, write a poem (six) based off your title, which could be "Never look both ways when crossing the street" or "Never blush in public" or "Never ever" or "Never write a poem (six) with the word never in the title." You get the idea, right?

And here are today’s selections from The Writer’s Book of Matches:

#1: A mail carrier begins to suspect that a customer on his route is engaged in something fishy.

#2: I lie awake at night thinking that marrying her was the wrong choice.

Give it your best shot and create a work of genius. See you in the comments later.

I'm in a prose-poem funk today. This is in response to the marrying her was a wrong choice prompt.

My Love Was a Bower

I knew she didn’t love me, but I loved her enough for both of us. She needed refuge; my boughs were wide and shady. For a long time, giving and taking shelter was enough. She reclined beneath me; I cast my gentle, cool love upon her.

Then one day, she grew pale; she wanted more. She longed to turn her face to the sky and feel the sun warm her skin once again. I knew she’d burn, but I had no way to hold her. I was rooted without feet to run after her.

Must be a romance bug in the air, Greta. Very thoughtful piece that speaks on different levels. (Applause).

Mine is on "Never"

“I never dance to that song,” she says as she walks off the dance floor, one hand trailing invitingly behind her.

“Aw, it’s a great tune,” I say, taking her hand.

She turns, gently slipping free of my grasp and faces me, her beauty diminishing in the terrible sadness haunting her eyes. The part of me that already wants to know everything about her, to be a sponge to her sparkling water and soak her all in rebels at the notion that there are already lines being drawn. But, instinctively I know if I press the issue I will never see her again.

I nod and lead her off the dance floor.

Sorry I am late to the party. Yesterday was one of those days. I had to sign closing papers for my parents since they don't live in Texas yet. Work was a bugger. With all that, I didn't even get a chance to look at the prompts yesterday.

I loved both of the prompts you guys used (and you did excellent jobs, btw). For my contribution, I decided to mix a little bit of each. I broke though the ceiling with this one, reaching a height of eight sentences, but I'm in with good company.

Never Been Happier

I lie awake at night thinking that marrying her was the wrong choice, you know? I mean, all I really wanted was someone to love me for who I was, not for who they wanted me to be. But then, like what’s his face’s thousand points of light, it was a bunch of tiny little turds, only they added up to one big one. "Jered, take out the trash, mow the lawn, kick off your boots before you step in the house, you put the toilet paper roll on the wrong way…"

Toilet paper.

Can you believe that one?

On and on, I thought the beat down would never end, and that one day I would wake up, take a look in the mirror and say, “Who the hell are you?” But six years ago to the day, it finally did end; and though all I've got to look at now are cement walls and men in grey uniforms, I ain’t never been happier.

Stephen, I don't know how you managed to inject humor in a guy killing his wife and going to prison, but you did it. Great twist.

John, outstanding. You've captured that little bit of uncomfortable compromise that seems to live in all relationships. Sexy and a little sad. Nice job.

Nice one Stephen. That's submission worthy, for sure.
